“When you play really good football teams, which they are, you can’t give them an inch because they’ll take a mile,” Seabreeze head football coach Mike Klein said following his team’s 35-7 loss to Bishop Moore on Friday, Sept. 11, at Daytona Stadium.
Both District 6-4A teams are now 2-2. Seabreeze began the season with wins over Father Lopez (30-14) and Tocoi Creek (21-14), but has now lost two in a row. Bishop Moore has two close losses including a 21-18 setback on the road to Palos Verdes, the No. 28-ranked California team.
I am proud of how the guys fought, proud of how they played and the energy they played with. We can learn from this and just continue to get better week in and week out because I think we’re capable. We are 2-2. Everything we want to do is still in front of us. Every opportunity we want to take is still there.
— MIKE KLEIN, Seabreeze football coach
“This is a good football team,” Klein said of Bishop Moore. “I am proud of how the guys fought, proud of how they played and the energy they played with. We can learn from this and just continue to get better week in and week out because I think we’re capable. We are 2-2. Everything we want to do is still in front of us. Every opportunity we want to take is still there.”
Bishop Moore held Seabreeze to a scoreless first half while racking up all 35 of its points.
Hornets quarterback Blake McCullough threw four touchdown passes, two each to tight end Andrew Follett and Magnus Talma. Cale Britt returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Bishop Moore's defense forced three Seabreeze turnovers.
Defensive back A.J. Brown scored the Sandcrabs' only touchdown on a 55-yard fumble return in the third quarter. Seabreeze rushed for over 100 yards with running back Jeremias George gaining 61 yards on 14 carries, and Beckett Fowler running for 59 yards on 13 carries. George also caught two passes for 13 yards.
Klein said the Sandcrabs’ offensive line played well and he saw a lot of improvement in his team during the game.
“I thought Beckett Fowler ran the ball really hard in the backfield — he’s a physical player, which is what you have to be to be successful at football,” Klein said. “Jeremias ran the ball well. He always does. Defensively, Sebastian Tocco, stepped up and made some really big plays.”
Klein said junior Cameron Harris did a good job at cornerback in his first start.
“He’s been waiting for his shot, and playing well in practice,” Klein said. “A guy missed a practice, and that gave him an opportunity. We talk all the time to our players — you never know when your opportunity will come. You just have to be ready to take it when it shows up. He got a great opportunity to play tonight, and I was really proud of him. [I] thought he did a good job.”
Klein said he was proud his players came out strong in the second half, halting Bishop Moore’s point fest.
“We fought in the second half, and that’s what I want to see,” Klein said. “When the guys care enough to fight for each other till the end, no matter the outcome, then you can build. Then you can get better.”
Seabreeze has a week off before it visits New Smyrna Beach on Friday, Sept. 25.
“We got a few bumps and bruises and some small injuries, so we’ve got to heal up then get back to work,” Klein said. “We have a big test coming off bye week at New Smyrna the following week. There’s no time to worry. I told the guys there’s not really time to pout or hold your head down because I’m not disappointed. We just need to continue improving and stay on course.”
