Shirley Ruth Skinner passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2026, in Ormond Beach, Florida, at the age of 99.
Born on December 6, 1926, in Elmira, New York, Shirley lived a life that spanned nearly a century. In 1949, she married Gerald R. Skinner, and they shared 58 years of marriage until his death in 2007. They later made their home in Miami, Florida, where they raised their daughter and built their family life together.
Shirley was a homemaker for many years and, later, worked as a realtor in South Florida. She was also a lifelong Episcopalian whose faith remained an important part of her life. For many years, she taught Sunday School and was active as a member of the Order of Eastern Star, PM, and the Daughters of the Nile.
At the age of 54, Shirley suffered a major stroke. Even so, she continued forward with determination throughout the years that followed. Later, she and her family relocated to Winter Park, Florida, and eventually to Ormond Beach to be closer to their grandchildren.
Her interests included sewing, reading, and working jigsaw puzzles. These quiet pursuits remained a meaningful part of her life and reflected the active mind she maintained over the years.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Shirley James; her son-in-law, Bruce; her four grandchildren, Stacey, Mason, Troy, and Clay; and her four great-grandchildren, Violet, Hazel, Gabriel, and Cameron.
A small family service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach on September 18. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
