Turning the ball over and giving up big plays was a formula for disaster for Seabreeze’s football team in its first loss of the season on Sept. 4 at Satellite.
The Scorpions took advantage of three Seabreeze fumbles and scored on three long touchdown passes and a long TD run to win 35-2.
Satellite improved to 3-0, while Seabreeze fell to 2-1.
“It was a rough one,” Seabreeze coach Mike Klein said. “It just seemed like at every turn something would go wrong. And it was in all phases of the game.”
A strip sack led to the Scorpions' first touchdown, a 40-yard run by Raiden Kerr. Satellite went up 21-0 at the half on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Brody Grennan to Noah Corriveau and a 42-yard scoring pass from Grennan to Luke Herte.
Grennan shook off a defender on the pass to Corriveau, who broke a tackle on his way to the end zone. A Seabreeze fumble set up Herte’s catch.
Grennan and Corriveau hooked up again on a 33-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, and the Sandcrabs’ fumbled the ensuing kickoff at their own 1 to set up a short touchdown run.
“You can't give up explosive big plays, and you can't turn the football over, and we definitely did those two things,” Klein said. “It just felt like we came out flat. I didn't do a good enough job of getting the guys prepared. Hats off to Satellite. They're definitely a good football team. They came out ready to play. They executed. They played physical, and we just didn't match them in any of those categories.”
Seabreeze finally got on the scoreboard late in the game on a high punt snap by the Scorpions. The punter fell on the ball in the end zone for a safety.
Satellite held Seabreeze to 81 yards of offense. Noah Bogdanowicz completed 6 of 15 passes for 33 yards and Jeremias George ran for 29 yards on eight carries.
“In almost every way that things could go wrong, it seemed like it happened,” Klein said. “The turnovers came on a couple of plays that looked good. One was a screen pass. They got through and knocked it out from our guy. Defensively, they’d get behind us for a big play.”
Seabreeze opens district play against Orlando Bishop Moore on Friday, Sept. 11, at Daytona Stadium.
“We got to step up and move on,” Klein said. “The rest of our schedule is a tough slate. So, we can’t have setback weeks. We’ve got to keep getting better. Bishop Moore has a lot of good players. They've got a great coaching staff, and so it's going to be a real test for us.”
