Seabreeze rallies to win to open season at 2-0 for the first time in 13 years

The Sandcrabs intercepted two passes and scored three touchdowns in the second half to defeat Tocoi Creek 21-14.

Seabreeze held off Tocoi Creek for a 21-14 win on Friday, Aug. 28, helping the Sandcrabs improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2013.

Seabreeze coach Mike Klein expressed trepidation regarding his team’s limited game time and outdoor practices due to inclement weather. They lost 17-14 in the kickoff classic against Matanzas on Aug 14 and won 30-14 in the season opener against Father Lopez, after the game was called at halftime due to persistent lightning. Klein said his team has only gotten outside two days in the past two weeks.

“We played a kickoff classic game that wasn’t crisp —we started rolling guys in the second half, and I was a little nervous about that,” Klein said. “Then we only got a half in last week, so coming into the Tocoi game, we were a little untested.”

Both teams were scoreless the first half after two Tocoi Creek touchdowns were called back. Seabreeze kept pushing defensively before the break with a sack by linebacker Tristan Miller and a fumble recovery by defensive end Nick Viscomi.

“We came out offensively, and Tocoi was doing stuff a little bit different formationally than what we had seen, so we had to make some quick adjustments,” Klein said. “I thought we did a good job with that. We’ve been preaching to our offense to start fast, start fast, start fast.”

Five minutes into the third quarter, Seabreeze’s Jeremias George ran for a touchdown. Tocoi Creek running back Camden Morton and quarterback Charlie Bowler answered with back-to-back touchdowns.

Seabreeze wide receiver Danny Spada danced on the sideline when the ’Crabs were down 14-7. Spada remained positive and upbeat because he knew they were better than Tocoi Creek, he said.

“They practice too, but they don’t practice as hard as us,” Spada said. “We’re there every day. Rain, wind, lightning … we’re giving it our all, and I trust my teammates on my back. I knew when we were down, I knew we had them.”

Klein called for a fake punt in the fourth quarter.

“We have a few fake punts and had practiced a couple of them all week, depending on the look we got,” he said. “They (Tocoi) gave us a look for that one so we went. It was executed well and set us up for a score on the next play.”

Spada followed with an 80-yard touchdown catch and run to tie the score 14-14 halfway through the fourth quarter.

“We had more of a running attack because of the way they played their defense,” Spada said. “But they had some ducks at the corners. If you know, you know. Coaches were like, ‘We’ve got to throw Danny the ball.’ So they started throwing me the ball. Pressure makes diamonds. That’s all I gotta say.”

Defensive end Matthew Wells halted Tocoi’s ensuing drive  with a tackle for loss. Defensive back A.J. Brown snagged an interception and returned it to the Toros’ 30-yard line. Running back Beckett Fowler rushed for a touchdown two minutes later to put Seabreeze on top, 21-14.

Brown grabbed his second interception with a little over a minute remaining in the game to secure the victory.

 This is Brown’s senior year and his first season playing football for the Sandcrabs. He has been a point guard on the varsity basketball team since he was a sophomore.

Brown said he gave up a big play in the second quarter, and his teammates helped lift his spirits. He regrouped and came back with his first interception. He was on top of the world, he said, and knew he was going to get another interception.

“I had to keep my head up, and my team helped me up,” he said. “I really appreciate them. I couldn’t have done this without them. I’ve got to give it all to my team. I love them. Glory to God.”

Klein said if a defensive back makes a mistake, it often results in points. He is happy for Brown because he holds himself to a really high standard and strives to be excellent.

Klein said it was a whole team effort, and that is something he was proud of. When the offense needed first downs, they got them; when the defense needed stops, they got them, he said.

“[I’m] really proud of how they came out after the half,“ Klein said. “I felt like our offense started putting their foot on the pedal. We challenged our defense to make some big plays at the end, and they came up big when we needed it.

 “Just a well-fought game. That’s probably what I’m most proud of. I told our guys we’re going to play in a lot of tough, close games, and it’s good to see us play in one this week and fight till the end.”

Seabreeze (2-0) travels to Satellite Beach to play Satellite (3-0) on Thursday, Sept. 3. The Scorpions are coming off a 52-0 win against Daytona Beach Halifax Academy and a 56-0 win against Legacy Charter.
