Dear Editor:
First, let me say that I did not win the primary election. That is not what this is about. This is about voter turnout in Flagler County.
While turnout was better than in some elections, with roughly a mid-30% turnout among registered Republicans and Democrats, and only 13% of NPA, about 70% of registered voters did not cast a ballot. Here is what they missed:
They missed the opportunity to have a voice in choosing the next Flagler County School Board members from Districts 1 and 2. Those races were decided in the Tuesday, Oct. 18, primary.
They missed the opportunity to have a voice in choosing our next Circuit Court Judge, a race that was also decided in the primary.
They missed the opportunity to help decide the Palm Coast City Council races in Districts 2 and 4. Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, those races will continue into November.
They also missed the opportunity to have a voice in choosing their party’s candidates for major statewide offices, including governor and lieutenant governor, who will appear on the November ballot.
Of the approximately 99,000 registered voters in Flagler County, fewer than 30,000 cast a ballot. That should concern all of us.
Since the time when our founding fathers chose to be independent and established a system of government based on the principle that citizens have a voice in choosing those who represent them, well over 1 million American service members have given their lives in defense of our nation and the freedoms we enjoy — including the freedom to vote.
We cannot honor that sacrifice merely by remembering it. We honor it by exercising the freedoms they fought to preserve, including the right to vote.
