Guitars, banjos, ukeleles, upright basses, box drums and many other instruments all have one thing in common. They are welcome at the Palm Coast Acoustic Jam Session in the Hammock.
There’s only one catch: No amplifiers.
“It's all acoustic,” group founder Peter Wentworth said. “So, anyone who plays an acoustic instrument or sings or does anything, anyone's invited.”
The Acoustic Jam session happens every fourth Friday of the month from 2-5 p.m. at the Hammock Community Center under the pavilion.
Wentworth, a Hammock resident, started the group around two years ago to play music more often.
“I can’t get enough of this stuff,” Wentworth said. “There are jams everywhere all over the area and I just wanted to get one closer home. So it's the same format up and down Florida.
Although Wentworth started the group and posts the jam sessions from his Facebook page, he is reluctant to take credit for being the group’s leader.
“[I] put it out there and people come out, show up,” Wentworth said. “None of us have practiced together.”
People definitely show up. During the jam session on Friday, Aug. 28, 14 people attended.
“I just want to find stuff that I used to do when I used to live back in Arizona, which was doing open mics,” said Bailey Amodo, a guitar repair specialist.
The group welcomes anyone – from those who sing, to those who enjoy listening. During the recent jam session, the group performed classics, including “The Candy Man Can” from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," John Denver’s “Country Roads”, James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain”, and “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty.
The next jam session is scheduled for Sept. 25.
