Volusia County Schools invited students who completed the Superintendent's Summer Home Run Reading Challenge to attend a free Daytona Tortugas baseball game on Monday, Aug. 31.
Dr. Leigh Prokop, the district's director of elementary schools, threw the ceremonial first pitch,
according to a post by the district on Facebook. New Smyrna Beach High School freshman Jake Snyder also sang the national anthem.
To complete the reading challenge, students had to read 750 minutes or more during the summer.
"Congratulations to all our amazing readers," the district stated. "We are proud to celebrate your hard work and love of learning—both inside and outside the classroom!"
