6:50 p.m. — 100 block of Clyde Morris Boulevard, Ormond Beach
Burglary. Police arrested a 62-year-old Ormond Beach man working as a volunteer security guard at a manufactured home community's gate who grabbed a woman's cell phone and refused to give it back.
The victim, who resided inside the community, told police that when she initially approached the guard gate, the guard was speaking with another resident, so she drove around them. This is something she's done in the past without an issue, she said.
The guard then approached the victim's vehicle, screaming at her for going around the car at the gate, leading her to record him, according to the police report. After the guard grabbed her phone, the victim went into the guard shack to call 911, but the landline wasn't working, so she used his phone.
While she was in the guard shack, the victim reported that the guard blocked her in, so she pushed him on the shoulders to get by. She was then able to get into her car and wait for police. She sustained an injury to her lip in the altercation over the cell phone.
When the reporting officer spoke with the guard, he initially refused to give his side of the story, asking another officer instead to relay it. Eventually, he did, and said that the victim "proceeded to cuss him out" when he approached her to ask why she drove around the gate. He admitted to grabbing her phone and said he told the victim to call the property manager about it.
12:55 a.m. — 1900 block of West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach
DUI. A 43-year-old Holly Hill man told police that he had taken so many drugs that when he drove into a local gas station — causing damage to a barrier and a parked car — he thought it was all a dream.
According to a police report, the man was seen driving a pickup truck and striking a rock barrier between two fuel pumps at the gas station before backing up and accelerating into a car parked in front of the store. Witnesses reported the man then drove away in the direction of a local big box store.
That's where police found him. The man had parked on the curb and was seen "dripping in sweat" as he sat in front of the store. He told police that he needed medical attention because he took too many drugs and was not doing well, the report states. The man told officers he'd taken a combination of cocaine, mushrooms and LSD.
He also claimed that, before he stopped at the store, he heard sirens and thought he was in a high-speed chase. The man said he drove into the store to try to wake himself up out of the dream and that he "couldn't believe it was real."
