Sanigh Arneaud's all-around game leads Matanzas to three-set volleyball win over Father Lopez

Arneaud, who has committed to Rollins College, had a combined 30 kills in wins last week against Lopez and Flagler Palm Coast.

Coming off a five-set victory over rival Flagler Palm Coast, the Matanzas High School volleyball team won its second match in two days with a 3-0 victory against visiting Father Lopez on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Outside hitter Sanigh Arneaud, who committed over the summer to Rollins College, led the Pirates (3-1) with 12 kills, eight serving aces and nine digs against the Green Wave. 

Matanzas knocked down a total of 34 kills in the 25-14, 25-18 and 25-11 win. Sofia Kubler added 8 kills and Bristol Foley had 7 for the Pirates. Kubler also had 3 blocks. The visitors tied the second set 14-14 before Matanzas ended the set with a 7-4 run.

“We're strong at attacking,” Matanzas coach Sharell Arneaud said. “We're having to work a little bit more on fine-tuning our defense. We have a scrappy team that will hustle.”

Coach Arneaud said the Pirates experimented with different lineups against the Green Wave.

“We saw what worked and what didn’t work, so we have different options,” she said. “We’re using different setters depending on the game and the team.”

Haley Stewart and freshman Syrenity Arneaud combined for 26 assists with Stewart recording a match-high 14.

The Green Wave (2-2) were led by Mia Bruno-Lodwig with 6 kills and 3 aces and Addie Dean, who had 13 digs and 11 assists.

Sanigh Arneaud said beating FPC on Aug. 25 was a big confidence boost for the Pirates.

“I feel like towards the end we started picking up our energy a lot more than they did,” she said.

The two teams alternated wins before the Pirates won the final set 15-6. Matanzas had 48 kills against the Bulldogs with Sanigh Arneaud launching 18. Grace Taylor led FPC with 20 kills. The Pirates’ Stewart had a match-high 29 assists.

Sanigh Arneaud said she is excited about continuing her volleyball career at Rollins next year. 

“I've met like a lot of my future teammates,” she said. “I can't wait to be on campus.”
