Joe Biro opened the Kings Java Hut coffee trailer to give his niece in Arizona a business to run. But she decided not to come to Florida.
So instead, Annie Urquia, a friend of Biro’s from church, is making the fresh coffee drinks and handing them out through the drive-through window at the little trailer in front of Club 51 Social Club of Palm Coast at 51 N. Old Kings Rd.
Kings Java Hut has been open for about two months. Biro imports the coffee beans from Colombia and Nicaragua. Everything else is local, he said, including his roaster. He uses Trilogy Coffee Roasting Company in DeLand. Every piece of machinery in the trailer is brand new, including a $3,000 espresso bean grinder, Biro said.
Kings Java Hut focuses on coffee and specialty drinks. They have muffins when available but no other food or pastries, Biro said.
The coffee is ground fresh. Kings Java Hut has fresh drip coffee, 18-hour cold brew, lattes, cappuccinos, Americanos, white or chocolate mochas with whipped cream and caramel macchiatos with vanilla and tall froth. Their speciality drinks include the blonde latte (latte and cream with choice of flavor) and Nutty Hazel (white or chocolate mocha, hazelnut and rich cream).
Their newest drink is the Honey Buzz: an iced drink with a honey cinnamon base, double espresso, milk and cold foam or whipped topping.
Kings Java Hut is open Tuesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noonish, Biro said.
Their non-coffee drinks include hot chocolate and the steamer (warm or cold milk with flavor choice). Prices range from $3.00 for the steamer, $3.25 for hot chocolate and $3.50 for a 12-ounce regular or decaf coffee to $6.75 for the 16-ounce Nutty Hazel.
Prices are always 50% off for service members and veterans. On Military Monday, the first 25 cups for service members and veterans are free. On Funtime Fridays, everything is 50% off from 8-10 a.m. and a cup of coffee and a muffin is $5. Drinks for first responders are free on Fridays.
Biro said the name came from a coffee business he once owned in California, Joe’s Java Hut. Since this coffee trailer is on Old Kings Road, he added “Kings” to the name, he said.
“Now it’s just a hobby,” he said. “It’s not an income stream for me. If it works out, I’ll expand. Right now, I’m pretty happy.”
