As of September 18, Flagler County’s Household Hazardous Waste site – 1700 S. Old Kings Road, Flagler Beach – will be closed. Items such as paint, tires, light bulbs, and oil can be brought to WastePro – 401 S. Bay Street, Bunnell – at the residents’ expense.
Residents may bring up to 100 pounds or 10 gallons of material, per visit for $25 – apart from tires ($10 for passenger vehicle tires and $25 for commercial and heavy-duty vehicle tires). Residents are asked to call ahead of making drop off, 386-586-0800.
“Closing our Household Hazardous Waste site was brought up during a presentation at the July 13 Budget Workshop,” said Interim County Administrator Adam Mengel.
Acceptable items include:
PAINTS & COATINGS
- Oil-based and latex paint & stains
- Aerosol paints
- Solvents, thinners & strippers
- Epoxies and catalyst components
- Adhesives
- Roofing tar
- Petroleum-based caulking
PESTICIDES, POOL & CLEANING
- Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides
- Fertilizers (liquid or granular, original container)
- Pool chemicals: muriatic acid, chlorine, bromine, cyanuric acid
- Cleaning chemicals: ammonia, bleach, drain openers, disinfectants
- All types of acid and alkali material
- Be aware of compatibility issues – especially pool and cleaning chemicals.
RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
- Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad)
- Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
- Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)*
- “Button” batteries

- Note: Alkaline/Zinc single-use batteries are household trash. Place tape on terminals before disposal.

- Transport mercury devices in a spill-proof container to avoid spills.

- Automotive fluids: 10 gal/30 days | Fuels: 10 gal/30 days in certified container <6 gal

Why it matters: Many household products are dangerous due to ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity or toxicity. Mismanagement – mixing, improper storage, or disposal – threatens your health and our environment. Over 90% of Florida’s drinking water comes from groundwater. When disposed of properly, residents are doing their part to protect our water resources and the environment for future generations.
