A Deltona man fleeing from Highway Patrol who carjacked a woman's vehicle in Ormond Beach was arrested on Thursday, Aug. 20, by the Volusia Sheriff's Office and New Smyrna Beach Police Department after he crashed into oncoming traffic on State Road 44.
According to the Sheriff's Office, 41-year-old Scott Taylor was being pursued by FHP out of Jacksonville when he got off I-95 in Ormond Beach. The Ormond Beach Police Department reported that around 12:19 p.m., a carjacking was reported out of Destination Daytona.
Taylor then traveled south toward New Smyrna Beach, where he crashed into two vehicles near the I-95 overpass. The Sheriff's Office reported he attempted to flee again, but was able to be taken into custody.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the use of flock cameras (automated license plate readers) led to Taylor's arrest, as after he stole the woman's car in Ormond, its vehicle tag was entered into the "LPR hotlist."
Flock cameras caught the tag and alerted law enforcement that the stolen vehicle was headed eastbound on SR 44.
While fleeing from law enforcement, Taylor drove at speeds hitting 137 mph, according to the Sheriff's Office.
At SR 44 and Walmart, he crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into two vehicles.
“Thank you to all the agencies involved in this coordinated response,” said Police Chief Jesse Godfrey in a press release. “Crimes that cross jurisdictional boundaries can become complicated, and we’re grateful to work alongside our neighboring agencies to protect our communities.”
Taylor was charged with two counts of carjacking, two counts of battery, grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude, burglary of an occupied vehicle and false imprisonment.
