A passenger in an SUV was killed in a crash on I-95 in Ormond Beach after colliding with a box truck on Monday, June 30, Florida Highway Patrol reported.
The crash took place at 1:42 p.m. at mile marker 272, south of the U.S. 1 exit. The passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Ramseur, North Carolina, was pronounced dead on the scene. The SUV was driven by a 24-year-old man from Asheboro, North Carolina, and FHP reports they had been traveling northbound on I-95 in the center lane when the box truck, driven by a 34-year-old Palm Coast man, was attempting to merge back into the interstate from the outside shoulder.
Witnesses advised the SUV's driver swerved toward the outside shoulder and rear-ended the box truck.
A third vehicle, an SUV driven by an 86-year-old Palm Coast woman, was traveling northbound on the outside lane as well and attempted to swerve to avoid the crash, striking debris instead. She and the box truck driver sustained no injuries.
The North Carolina driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, FHP reports.
