The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to dedicate the new competition horseshoe courts at Old Dixie Park 3 p.m. Monday, July 16, at 1250 S. Dixie Highway.

Built to the standards of the National Horseshoe Pitching Association, the courts project began in February. The venue features 18 courts, storage for maintenance equipment and a picnic pavilion.

County officials are also working with the Flagler County Horseshoe Pitching Club in hopes of landing local and state tournaments at the park, near Plantation Bay.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Tom Martone, president of the Flagler County Horseshoe Pitching Club, said the project was “a dream come true,” noting that his organization has worked four years to get a sanctioned court in Flagler.

County Commission Chairwoman Barbara Revels said that with 70 horseshoe tournaments a year in the state, the new facility should be a tourism draw for the county.

“They can come and compete in Flagler County and stay and enjoy what our county has to offer,” she said.
