In a cost-savings effort, Palm Coast will soon remove 50 street lights that have been deemed redundant, according to City Manager Jim Landon.
The Jan. 20 Week in Review document provided by the city stated there are 50 street lights that are redundant and are no longer needed to illuminate streets.
Each light costs the city between $8 and $12 per month, but Landon said the average is about $9. After removing 50 lights, the city will save approximately $5,400 per year. The upfront cost to remove each light is about $200, or $10,000 total.
The city will get a return on its investment within two years, Landon said.
“It’s the green thing to do,” Landon said. “It’s about efficiency ... tightening the belt, like usual.”
Palm Coast also hopes to become Florida Power & Light’s pilot city for using LED street lights along Belle Terre Parkway south. LED lights , or light-emitting diodes, are more energy efficient and last longer.
Landon said the power company hasn’t made any final plans or decisions.
The city puts up street lights at every intersection of each arterial and collector street. If a resident would like to have a street light erected on their street, they can make a request to the city. (Call 986-3700.)

The Palm Coast City Council will meet 9 a.m. Tuesday, at City Offices. Street lights aren’t on this week’s agenda.
Some items for Tuesday’s meeting include presentation on the city’s latest marketing/branding strategy. There will also be discussion on the upcoming gateway beautification projects. This year, the City Council has $200,000 in the budget for beautification.
The City Council will also discuss the purchase of mowers for $158,519.25 from Wesco Turf and Triple D Equipment Inc.
