For the past 20 years, the Flagler County Art League has held a show to introduce the community to the creative minds behind the art. This year is no exception.

FCAL will hold its Saturday Afternoon With the Artist opening reception 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the gallery, 160 Cypress Point parkway, Suite 207C.

For two hours before the reception, 2-4 p.m., the gallery will be open to the public to meet the artists.

The art presented in this show includes many media and skill levels.

Barbara Lindfors is an oil painter who started painting as a child when her Girl Scout troop worked on an arts patch. When she was older, she began to find a niche.

Lindfors painted Southwestern still life pieces for 15 years, with her first gallery show in Arizona.

“I do believe in giving back to the community,” said Lindfors, who also serves as the membership chair of FCAL. “Art leagues have really done a lot for me, and it behooves us to give back.”

In regard to the upcoming meet-the-artists show, Lindfors believes that it calls for more accomplished work.

Another artist who will be showing his work at the art league is photographer Dan Borougian.

Borougian bought his first camera, a Minolta SR1, in 1963. Since then, his style of photography has changed with the introduction of new technology.

“For the most part, my belief is that when it comes to photography a picture has to grab you right away,” Borougian said. “It pops, or it doesn’t. If you have to look at it and decipher what it’s trying to show, that’s not good photography. It has to all be right there. And if it’s not, it’s not really good.”

Borougian, a former president of FCAL, from 1999 to 2000, enjoys doing work featuring strong contrast and believes that Photoshop is a tool all serious photographers should be using.

John Schumacher brings 3-D wood sculpture to the art league.

His artistic career is an extension of his life’s work as a furniture craftsman, which began as an apprentice in cabinet making at age 14.  Each sculpture is created in a variety of woods, and some of the larger pieces contain thousands of hand-cut pieces.

Schumacher started sculpting when he attended a class offered by the art league, taught by Howard Howrey and Bud Tanis.

His pieces in Saturday’s show differ greatly from the framed lighthouses and lake scenes he is known for. Following a heart attack, Schumacher, did not feel safe working with his woodcutting machine and reverted back to hand carving.
