Sidelines: Seniors lead the way for FPC at boys basketball showcase

Also, Mainland's boys basketball team hitting on all cylinders; Matanzas on hot streak.

BULLDOGS WIN TWO AT SHOWCASE

Flagler Palm Coast won two games in the Execute to Impact MLK Showcase at Spruce Creek last week.

Seniors Caumarion Lang and Jameer Clark scored 17 and 14 points, respectively, in a 58-53 win over Halifax Academy on Jan. 13. Sophomore Jack Wronowski added 10 points and six rebounds.

Lang led the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Clark scored 15 in a 44-33 win over DME Academy Gold on Jan. 15. FPC improved to 8-9 in coach Michael Talley's first season heading into their home game against Matanzas on Jan. 17.

RED-HOT PIRATES

Matanzas' boys basketball team has won four of its last five games heading into its game at FPC on Jan. 17. The Pirates improved to 7-10 after starting the season with seven losses in their first eight games.

Freshman Henry Robinson Jr. led Matanzas with 22 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-59 overtime win against Davenport on Jan. 15. Rya'sir Jefferson scored 14 points, despite a cold night from the 3-point arc, where he hit 2 of 11. Senior Tariq Shakir added 11 points.

BUCS IMPROVE TO 12-4

Mainland's boys basketball team is looking to return to the Class 5A state championship game this season.

The Bucs improved to 12-4 with an 81-51 victory over Spruce Creek on Jan. 12 and an 83-72 win over IMG Academy Blue on Jan. 13.

Freshman Kade Manley scored a team-high 27 points against IMG, while sophomore guard Nathan Kirk added 22 and 7-foot senior DeAndre Newland contributed 14 points.

Against Creek, 6-foot-6 senior Narayan Thomas scored 22 points, Kirk had 21 and Newland had 19.

Four players are averaging in double figures for the Bucs led by Kirk, who is averaging 15.4 points per game. Thomas is averaging 13.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

Mainland is scheduled to host Melbourne on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.

BUTTS RETURNS TO ATLANTIC

FPC girls basketball coach George Butts returns to the George Butts Basketball Court at Atlantic High School when the Bulldogs take on Deltona in a Five Star Conference Tournament game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20.

Butts won 515 games in 25 seasons as Atlantic's coach. This will be the first time he'll bring another team into the Sharks' gym.
